Amazing Donut Ice Cream Chimney

5/3/2016

Comments

There is a bakery in Prague making these (traditionally called Trdelnik) and their cones went kind of viral this week so I though it'd be awesome to try and make one - prague is a bit of a way away. Actually very easy to make. I used a beer bottle to wrap it around. Watch the video. Please like my facebook page and subscribe to my channel for more!

Enjoy. I kind of adapted a recipe from the Chocolate Chocolate and More website. This recipe makes about 3.
Amazing Donut Ice Cream Chimney
Ingredients

For the donut bit:

  • 100ml milk, warm
  • 1 sachet yeast, 7g
  • 4 pudding spoons sugar
  • 300g plain flour
  • 50g butter melted
  • 1 egg

For the outside:

  • 2 pudding spoons sugar
  • About 1 pudding spoon cinnamon
  • 1 egg
  • 1 pudding spoon water

For the filling:

  • Ice cream
  • 1 pudding spoon chocolate spread
  • Strawberries

Method

Heat the milk in the microwave until it is warm. About 30 secs. Pop the yeast in and 1 pudding spoon of sugar. Mix then let it stand for 10 mins. It goes kind of fizzy.

Meanwhile, measure the flour out into a bowl, add in the 3 remaining pudding spoons of sugar, the melted butter and the egg. Add in the yeast mix and then beat briefly. It should come together into a dough pretty quickly. Knead for a bit on a floured board (a couple of minutes does the trick) and then cover the bowl with cling film and let it sit somewhere for about 30 mins. It should rise a little bit.

After the time is up shape the dough into a large log and cut into three pieces. Now role a piece into a long rope - about 2 feet long. It should be as thick as your finger. See the vid!

Then get a beer bottle, wrap it in tin foil and rub it with cold butter. Wrap the rope of dough around the bottle, starting at the bottom. Don't overlap. You should get at least 3 coils on the bottle otherwise they slip down. IMPORTANT: I tried doing it from the top to make it into a cone shape but when it cooked it all came to bits so don't do that. We're going for a chimney, not a cone.

For the outside: grab a plate and put the sugar and cinnamon on it. Give it a mix about. Also grab your egg and a teaspoon of water and beat it together with a fork. Now gently spoon the egg wash onto the coils around the bottle then roll the bottle gently in the cinnamon sugar so that it's well coated.

Cook for 13-15 mins at 180. When you tap the outside it should sound kind of hard and a bit hollow. Carefully take the donut thing off by pushing down . It should not uncoil!

For the middle: pop a pudding spoon of chocolate spread into a bowl and microwave it for about a minute - it'll go runny. Now you can spread the chocolate on the middle of the chimney. Pop it on a plate then fill it with ice cream. Top with some sliced strawberries and crumbled oreos.

Fab. Eat with a spoon or kind of face plant it.
