This is another great Nigel Slater recipe which I have slightly adapted. It is absolutely divine. He puts waayyyyyy more mustard in but I found the amount below is just right. Serve with dauphinoise potatoes, some roasted tomatoes and the rest of the salsa. Easy. Quick. Delicious. Nothing to complain about - this is one of my favourite things ever. Biggest mistake I ever made with this was leaving it in a fridge for 3 weeks....did not smell good at the end. However, if you don't do that, it's amazing!
Saw some Stilton and couldn't resist. I am pleased to announce this is vegetarian #CowRightsRepresent. Very easy. Very nice. The first time I did this I used a tin where the bottom comes out else the milk leaks into the oven; this resulted in a tart. Tasted lovely but not worth cleaning the inside of the oven out every time! If you use a proper dish it makes a lovely quiche! Last Sunday Elena and I went to the Durham Christmas Market. We bought the most amazing sausages from The Northumberland Sausage Company. They made this pasta bake soooo good! Thoroughly recommend them or indeed any slightly funky sausage!
This was a fantastic evening. Elena and Venus cooked the turkey. Ronald and David made the best mashed potato ever, and Lawson Terrace (our house) made Apple Pie and Double-Decker Chocolate Bread and Butter Pudding (posting soon!).
It was just a superb night. Thanks to Venus for the picture below. This is another recipe that I have slightly adapted from the Crumbs Family Cookbook and it is fab! Apart from the sausage this is very nearly vegetarian so you could use something that isn't sausage if you want...?
This includes a Barking Baking Top Tip regarding carrots... succchhh fun! Superb on a cold night and this recipe makes enough for 5 meals. Just freeze what you have left over. I bought the meat for this from the butcher in the covered market in Durham. The gentleman very kindly cut the meat into thin slices for me and tenderised it (basically he hit it with a hammer thing!). This will last for a while in the fridge as long as you cover it.
Ideally serve with vegetables - perhaps some spinach? Equally nice as it is. This really is very easy - there is no frying - just lay the food in and then let it cook! Not everything is well in the Barking Baking den. I am feeling pretty cold-y and have a cough (awwww). Also, two nights ago I tried to make a haddock chowder and it was horrible. However, I am very pleased to announce that this was exquisite!
I used the eggs I bought for basically nothing from the grocery on Loft side of North Road, Durham. Must mention that I did not have quite enough money to pay the huge £1.80 so the lady allowed me to just pay £1.71; I am going to pay them back when I next head in there - you can get 6 mars bars for a pound so that's going to be very soon! Everyone go there and buy your fruit and veg! This recipe was introduced to me by Nick - affectionately nicknamed "GermaNic" because he comes from Germany. It was splendid. The chicken is sweet and it balances wonderfully with the mozzarella. When I did this at home for the fam my mum insisted on green beans too. Much as I hate to admit it, they weren't too bad. I was doubtful that so much balsamic vinegar would be a good thing in anything but it just works fabulously with the oregano and the brown sugar. The resulting sauce is rich and sweet, but it balances beautifully with the tomato salad. I couldn't get enough of the sauce. The reason the post is called "'H' is for Chicken" is because chicken in german is "Hühnchen" #toptip. It is also disgustingly easy to do. If you have it, chuck a slug of white wine in the risotto, or if you don't have them don't worry about the shallots! Enjoy. This is rather glorious. Went a little bit wild in Tesco and bought a load of meat. This is very nice with rice or as a thick soup!
This was totally improvised and absolutely delish! I originally had it with some rice but I have just had it as a soup/broth and it was fab!
When you reheat it, make sure you boil it through for a good five minutes #notaboutfoodpoisoning Give it a go. Very easy.
Rosie introduced me to this a few weeks ago when her brother was up. It smelt and tasted fantastic. She kindly sent me the recipe - it must be said it is originally a Nigel Slater (and therefore fabulous) and this is the Barking Baking attempt! Adding a little chilli powder is definitely worth it if you've got some as it adds a bit of a kick.
So easy. So full of flavour. So cheap. It made Rob very happy. Beautiful.
OK so when I first did this I thought it was Moussaka. I was wrong. Moussaka doesn't have courgette apparently... So this is a hugo-ism. Not going to lie my Dad didn't like it but my brother and Mum did, so I thought it's worth sharing anyway. It is pretty healthy (except the cheese!).
I am not going to lie: I looked up the recipe on Jamie Oliver's website for this one but didn't have any of the herbs or anything he suggests. Thus, his are probably a whole different league but these are great if you are just hungry on a Saturday morning and don't have much in the cupboard.
Very easy, very tasty. This is a Paul Hollywood recipe that I have adapted slightly. It is gorgeous. Eat straight away and/or pop it in the fridge and eat for the next couple of days (I recommend re-heating it in the microwave). If you are vegetarian then don't add the meat.
This is great comfort food. Makes enough for at least 4 meals so you can justify the extra money on the meat and wine (cheeky £3.33 at the grocery on North Road people of Durham). A very nice recipe, and it's healthy too! This is my first pie ever. Elena and I did it, it was her idea and it was fantabulous. Thoroughly recommend it! Looks like a lot of ingredients but it's actually not that bad - you probably have most of it lurking around somewhere. And don't be put off by the pastry - just get ready rolled stuff and it's easy! Massive thanks to the BBC for this recipe.
OK so this is more of the fish the man sold me a couple of weekends ago. It is really really good. Do it. This is an adaption of a Delia recipe and it's fab. Looks hard but it really isn't.
I was hungry at lunch and felt like some proper food. Sausages were, therefore, obviously on the agenda. This is easy. Do it.
This is a good, healthy lunch. Takes about half an hour by the time you have found everything.
This was a bit improvised - I knew I wanted to cook something but I wasn't sure what. I pottered over to Tesco and there I saw smoked salmon on offer! Woop! Anyhow, this is delicious and easy. People think you are being upmarket but actually you are just having a good meal.
A couple of weekends ago I woke up to a knock on the door from a man selling fish. He reassured me it had been freshly caught that morning and shipped in. We spent about 10 minutes disagreeing on the price of fish. I came out of it with 3 large-ish boxes of fish. One was skinned cod, one was non-skinned (technical term) cod and one is smoked haddock.
I have to confess I made something un-blogworthy with the skinned cod. However, I was determined to not cock up the rest. Our houses have been doing a kind of come dine with me/mates date night thing so Ronald came over and we decided upon fish and chips! Woop! They were great but I have to say Ronald's tartar was simply spectacular, and it's super easy! We forgot to take a picture of the food but here is a dark one of us eating it! We even have a candle #civilised. So easy it's unreal. Fills you up. Get on it for lunch. Ingredients
Method Just fry the mushrooms in some butter and Worcester. Serve with buttered toast. |
