Lascar CarmenĆØre 2015

23/10/2016

Comments

Lascar CarmenĆØre 2015
What the Wine Society notes say:

Ripe, soft, plummy, generously flavoured Chilean carmenère, and a members' favourite of some years. Discovering good, inexpensive wines of this quality is a rare event. What is remarkable about the Lascar wines is that they taste far more expensive and sophisticated than they have a right to, considering the price.

What we say:

Elena and I had a lovely supper with this one. It was one of those improvised meals with some tortellini, plenty of lovely bread, some cheese and a mud cake pud thing. Good stuff.

It's quite heavy but perfectly drinkable. I think we both agree when we say it was nice with blue cheese. Not my favourite but nothing wrong with it at all - had a fantastic evening.

How to make a green smoothie that doesn't taste like grass

20/10/2016

Comments

Muv and I made a green smoothie. It wasn't horrible. It was green. It was healthy. If you've got any other ideas, get in touch. The jar came from Elena and is pretty funky I think.  We got talking to John last night and he explained he was super keen on all these healthy smoothies as he's got a NutriBullet; I don't have one so we just used a blender. Seemed to do the trick.

Great Eats: Spaghetti House, Leicester Square

20/10/2016

Comments

So this is one of my favourite little places to eat in London. It's very close to Covent Garden and Leicester Square. I've never had a bad meal here. It's not meant to be fantastic cuisine - it's a fun place to go. It's pretty cheap and easy to get to. Thoroughly recommend.

Not my picture. It's at the end where all the roads come together.
Elena and I went earlier this week and had a lovely meal. In terms of food, she went for the salmon pasta thing and I had something with venison. Both tasted great. And the brownie was pretty good for pud!

PRAWN, WINE, ROCKET, TOMATO PASTA THING

16/10/2016

Comments

This recipe is roughly based on a recipe by young Jamie Oliver. It's not exactly the same - I've student-ified it a bit but I have to say I thought it was pretty good. I didn't end up adding any cheese but reckon that some parmesan wouldn't go amiss. White wine, rocket and prawns. A bit of spice as we add half a chilli. Really good.

Great Eats: Chelsea Stockpot for Brunch

Elena and I went here for brunch and thought it was awesome. It's great value and you get loads of food. You have to go. The coffee was also pretty good!

This is an image I've pinched from Google. I didn't take it.
We both had the Full English. It came to less than £17 for the both of us. Nice atmosphere and the lady who was serving was super on it. Definitely going back sometime.

Melt In The Middle Chocolate Cookie For One

10/10/2016

My big problem with baking is often that I end up eating everything I cook. Not good. However, this is great as it's just one cookie so you don't feel too guilty! And it's not a microwave thing so it is actually proper baking! Try it. Or this.

No Cook Mug Cheesecake

Having recently made the Chocolate Cheesecake I had some cream cheese left over. Rather than let it go to waste, I made this cheeky mug cheesecake. It went down well with Dad and he's notoriously hard to please...! Give it a shot.

Some honest musings on the Wine Society Claret. My thanks to Will for the wonderful opportunity to be a member of the Wine Society. It's amazing. He is currently (Sept 2016) kayaking from Grenada to Miami with George. Please donate to the Get Exploring Trust here. The charity details can be found here. Great stuff guys.

Great Eats: 9 Altars, Durham

25/9/2016

Comments

So I've started this Great Eats series after leaving Durham but seeing as I spent three years there I feel I can report back on what's a good place to eat out at, and what is not.

9 Altars is located right on the river in the centre of town. I would tend to grab a coffee and one of their brownies and then sit and ponder on a nearby bench. They also do fantastic cakes. They are delish but very big - alright for sharing though!

I had their club sandwich once with Elena and I must say it was fantastic. You should go along and try it.

This picture was taken from their Facebook page but gives an idea of the kind of beast we're talking about!

And here's a map to find it if you want. Address: 19A Silver St, Durham DH1 3RB.

Nice one Durham.

Great Eats: Sky Garden for Breakfast

25/9/2016

Comments

So Elena and I were up in London together the other week and we decided that we should try and go have an exotic breakfast. Elena had heard about the restaurant in the Walkie Talkie building. Our original plan had been to go for supper there but in the end we couldn't get a booking.

But there were spaces for the breakfast times. At 07:30. I know. Early. Still, we went for it.
Picture
After nipping through security, you jump in a lift all the way to the top where you are greeted by this amazing view. There's a bar area in the middle where you can grab your breaky. We got a couple of croissants and some coffee (needed it at that time of the morning!).

There was a cheeky yoga class going on at the top (about where the photo is taken from) and so we kind of avoided that.

The prices were very reasonable given you're sitting at the top of a monster building with a mega view. You could easily spend the same in Costa at ground level without the view.

We thoroughly recommend it!

Molten Cookie in a Cup (recipe review)

24/9/2016

Comments

So I saw a video called "Molten Cookie in a Cup" on the Food Bible Facebook page. It's actually from a site called Naughty Fork. The picture they posted showed a browned top of the cookie, yet they say that they microwaved it....but microwaves don't brown stuff...so we're not sure how that happened. Anyhow, this is my student version of it. Tastes great, doesn't brown.

Give it a shot.

Ultimate Fish Finger Sandwich

19/9/2016

Comments

This weekend I was home alone in London as I went to catch up with Cora, Rav and Rob. We had a fab evening. Before I went I made this; it was fast, tasty, filling and fun. And actually not too unhealthy I think! Fish is always good! Not going to lie, kind of had another one the following day and can report it's good for hangovers.

Anyway, here’s how you do it!

Triple Decker Scrummy Brownies

8/8/2016

Comments

Elena and I made these the other day for the parentals whilst we were in Cornwall! Such fun! They're probably the most unhealthy thing we've ever done, but hey, they tasted fantastic!

Basically it's a layer of cookie dough, then a layer of KitKats then a layer of brownie!

This recipe is inspired by a site called What's Gaby Cooking.

Venus' Lotus Key Lime Mini Pies

The use of Lotus Biscoff biscuits was Venus' idea in Durham and it's absolutely brilliant. I made 7 little ramekins of these because I don't want to accidentally eat an entire cheesecake on my own.

Spanish Tomato Bread

21/7/2016

Comments

So we've just been in Spain for a week. It was fab. I fell massively in love with all things tapas. One of the dishes that kept cropping up was this one. If you can get 'serrano' ham then that's the best way to go (I could only find parma ham, tragic but not disastrous!).

I've adapted this recipe from a BBC Good Food one. Top stuff. Enjoy. Makes a good starter/nibble.

Easy Double Chocolate Fudge Pud

23/6/2016

Comments

Elena had the idea to do some cheeky stripes for this one when we had supper with Will and Vicki the other week. As we were just cooking, we didn't write down how to do it, but this time I have! And I've added fudge, because, let's face it, fudge makes everything that little bit better. This is pretty similar to the Chocolate Heaven Pudding.

Egg-Free Chocolate Cake

15/6/2016

Comments

Ran out of eggs so made this egg-free/no egg/eggless cake. Pretty good despite lacking key eggy ingredient! Would still recommend a proper cake if you do have eggs though. Worth putting the topping on and also make sure you cover it with foil to stop it burning. This is a recipe from a BBC Good Food community member. They also put in vanilla extract but I didn't have any. Now you know.

Strawberry Pimms Iced Tea

So I bought some Pimms because Kit suggested a Pimms Cheesecake - I'm working on a recipe for that as the first one I did wasn't quite right. I also made this - it's quite refreshing. You might want to add sugar to it.

Feeling a tad gentle this morning. Wanted food that wasn't toast. This did the trick.
